Most atrocities are described afterwards as things nobody saw coming. El Fasher can’t be described that way.
The city in Sudan’s Darfur region was besieged by the Rapid Support Forces for around 18 months. Throughout that time, aid agencies warned of starvation, researchers tracked the encirclement using satellite imagery, and the United Nations issued alert after alert. In late October 2025, the city fell.
In February 2026, a UN fact-finding mission reported that what followed bore “the defining characteristics of genocide”, concluding that at least three underlying acts of genocide had been committed against the Zaghawa and Fur communities.
Here’s the uncomfortable part. The failure wasn’t a failure of information. The world had the warnings, the images and the timeline. What it didn’t have was any mechanism obliged to act on them.
That gap is the starting point for The Global Peace Alliance by Kizzi Nkwocha. The book proposes a standing multinational force, drawn from UN member states, with a simple sequence: when a conflict erupts, every party receives an immediate ultimatum to stop. If they refuse, the combined force enforces the peace.
It sounds straightforward. It isn’t.
Who decides when the threshold is crossed? Whose soldiers go in first? And what happens when an intervention goes wrong, as several well-intentioned ones have in recent decades? The book acknowledges these objections rather than waving them away, and argues that the cost of the current approach, watching and warning, is paid by the people least able to afford it.
Critics would say a standing force risks becoming a tool of whoever controls it. Supporters would say El Fasher shows what happens when nobody controls anything at all.
